Since we arrived in Paris, we have been going all day from one museum to the next. We are moving around on the very well laid out Metro system. One can get around Paris very quickly and efficiently on the subway. By the end of our day, which is around 6pm as all the museums are closing at that time, we usually walk along wonderful Parisian streets shopping in all the small unique shops looking for a wonderful supper location. Last night we found a great French restaurant (Chez Clément) and had an amazing meal. The highlights were the deep fried camembert cheese and the crème brulé. All of the cafés and restaurants have tables outside and the chairs all face the sidewalk so that the patrons can watch the people go by as they enjoy a drink or meal.
The museums in Paris are amazing. The selection of artifacts is incredible. We have never experienced the quality of their types of museums before. So far, we have visited the Music Museum which has instruments dating back to King Louis V, around 1200 and 1300. Each person received a handheld device and headphones. As you walked through the museum you would punch in the displayed numbers to hear about each instrument and the type of sound/music it produced. We then attended the Museum of Science and Innovation. It is about 10 times the size of Telus World of Science in Edmonton. We had half a day and probably saw a quarter of the exhibits. They had a lot of hands-on exhibits and we all had a great time with the many different exhibits.
Today, we finally got into the more well-known museums. We spent the day at the Notre Dame cathedral. It is truly an architectural marvel. The ability to create such a detailed building in that time period was truly amazing. These Cathedrals were the centre of each city and town. The stain glass windows brought the grey walls of the cathedral to life. This is truly a highlight so far. Also we were able to climb the 300 or more stairs up into one of the two bell towers and stand next to the Grand bell, just like Quasimoto. Next stop was the Napoleon museum and tomb. Again, an amazing selection of artifacts from that time period.
Tomorrow, we are off to the Louvre.
